In January 2020, I went to an evacuation centre set up in Iwaki, Japan for people whose homes were damaged or destroyed by Typhoon Hagibis in October 2019. When I visited, 3 months had past since the typhoon hit, yet 68 people still lived inside these school gyms. With the help of Peace Boat, a Japan-based international NGO, I was able to see the current reality inside these evacuation centres. What I found was surprising to say the least.
