Ranked: Number of Agricultural Workers by Country

The overwhelming majority - 52% - of people working in agriculture come from low-middle income countries in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. In stark comparison, only 3% of the world's agriculture workers come from high-income countries like the US and Europe.

Understanding how much of a country's employment depends on agriculture is critical because the agriculture sector is one of the most threatened industries by the climate crisis 🌍 . The agriculture sector will continue to face more unstable yields and returns, possibly causing income instability, food insecurity, economic decline and civil unrest. Even if we are not all working in agriculture, everyone is dependent on the global food system. And therefore, a farmer's issue should be all of our issues 🤝 . My hope is that by understanding the data more, we can better identify countries with high risk, and aim to collectively future-proof their economies 🤲 .
