Dear Sustie, how do you grocery shop?
Do you mindlessly take a plastic bag if given one? Or do you choose a paper bag alternative? Even better, do you carry your own bag to put your groceries in?
But...if you use a reusable bag instead...how often do you forget to bring it to the store? Or how often do you run out of space in your reusable bag and use a plastic bag anyway? Do you have a pile of these bags at home because you receive so much of them for free? Even though reusable bags help reduce plastic pollution, it takes a lot more energy to make these then plastic bags. You’d have to use one cotton bag about 7,000 times for it to have less environmental impact than a plastic bag!!
Let’s look at plastic pollution though. Because of the single-use plastic we use, 1.1 million seabirds and animals die every year 🐠. One in two sea turtles have eaten plastic, and 90% of seagulls have plastic hanging out in their tummy. We might use more energy to make non-plastic bags, but at least we can avoid hurting animals.
There is no silver bullet. One pollutes and hurts animals and the other uses lots of energy. Maybe the best is to just hand-carry everything?
